"Jesa is a family ancestral ritual. Even though it is a popular tradition that people in Korea practice, it is more and more becoming a choice, and a growing population is refusing to follow the patriarchal aspects of it. Also, many families develop their own style of Jesa. When they do it and how it looks can be diverse based on culture, religion and personalities of each family.

My family's look like a combination of my father side's Shamanistic Buddhism and my mother side's Catholicism. It's usually casual with light foods and a compact family gathering. I often skipped and can’t attend anymore now that I am living far away, but when I attended, I always found it interesting how there are all kinds of ancestors and gods, even the one that refused to be next to other gods, are mixed into it." -- Woomin Kim
